SUMMARY: U.S. residents, including those in Mississippi, have until May 7 to obtain a REAL ID to fly commercially. REAL ID is a federally compliant state-issued ID established by the 2005 Real ID Act to enhance airport and federal building security. To get a REAL ID in Mississippi, individuals must visit a driver’s license service bureau with specific documents, including a Social Security card and proof of residency. Most Mississippi drivers issued licenses since 2018 already have REAL IDs. After May 7, REAL IDs can still be obtained but won’t be valid for air travel or federal access until issued.

SUMMARY: Mississippi lawmakers approved Senate Bill 2573, which would create a standalone Department of Tourism, separating it from the Mississippi Development Authority (MDA). However, due to a budget impasse and no appropriations bill, Gov. Tate Reeves vetoed the bill. He expressed concerns about the lack of funding details for both MDA and the new tourism agency. While recognizing the importance of tourism, Reeves warned that without proper funding, it would be irresponsible to weaken MDA or set up the new department to fail. Mississippi’s tourism industry reached record numbers in 2023, drawing 43.7 million visitors and generating $17.5 billion.
