“You could hear it, you could feel it” Hurricane Ivan 20 years later
SUMMARY: Twenty years ago, Hurricane Ivan struck Gulf Shores with devastating force, leaving destruction in its wake. Jeremy Lee, owner of Downunder Dive Shop, recalls the storm’s intensity and the extensive preparations made. Upon returning, he found significant damage, with parts of the roof and walls gone, and debris scattered everywhere. Mayor Robert Craft, then a newly elected councilman, described the chaos, including missing roads and rivers forming unexpectedly. The mandatory evacuation during Ivan saved lives, reinforcing the importance of preparedness for future storms. Ivan’s impact serves as a reminder for coastal communities to remain vigilant against potential disasters.

September 16 is a date that holds strong significance for Gulf Coast residents. It was 20 years ago, September 16, 2004, when a storm named Ivan made landfall near Gulf Shores. The damage from that storm was tremendous.

Calmly, he first called Megan’s mother and then 911, providing precise information and helping the operator monitor Megan’s breathing until EMTs arrived. His quick thinking likely saved her life, as she later had another seizure and might have suffered worse alone.
