Itโs not unusual for voters not to know whatโs on the ballot
SUMMARY: Voting is seen as a crucial duty, especially for those who remember the struggles for voting rights in the 1960s. With the general election just two weeks away, candidates like VP Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are in the spotlight, but many voters are unaware of the other races on Mississippi’s ballot. Zach Wallace, Hinds County Circuit Clerk, emphasizes the importance of being informed about all candidates before voting. There are a total of 12 additional races, including those for Senate and congressional districts. Voters can contact local offices for sample ballots and candidate information to make educated choices.

Ward 2 voters choose new council person
SUMMARY: Polling places are busy as voting continues, with close to 600 ballots already cast at one location. Candidates Marcus Cheatham, a retired Army Colonel, and Tina Clay, a long-time State Farm insurance agent, are competing in this runoff election. Previous turnout was approximately 600 votes in the special election three weeks prior, and similar numbers are expected today. Voter engagement efforts are evident, with neighbors encouraging each other to participate. The new council member will replace Angelique Lee, who resigned amid a bribery investigation, as the polls close at 7:00 PMโanyone in line by that time can still vote.

Burn bans issued across Mississippi as dry conditions persist
SUMMARY: Eleven burn bans have been issued in Mississippi, primarily in the Pine Belt, due to low humidity, high winds, and little rainfall, leading to rapid fire spread. Crews recently battled a large fire in Green County that consumed 450 acres. The National Weather Service predicts a cold front might bring rain, but concerns remain over wind conditions. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning to prevent wildfires, especially as wind speeds could reach 15-25 mph. Violation of burn bans can result in fines up to $500. Caution is advised, especially with trailer chains and littering.
