After backlash to the original choice, Mississippi Brightwell University, the university took new name suggestions. A survey was conducted to gauge the acceptance of the names. The new proposed name, Wynbridge State University of Mississippi, was revealed on February 13. The university announced it in front of Poindexter Hall on the MUW campus and the event included speeches from Mayor Keith Gaskin and President Nora Miller.
