SUMMARY: A civil trial began today for Mary Carter, a former Deputy Director of Public Works for Jackson, suing the city for retaliation. Carter claims she was fired during the 2022 water crisis for giving a media interview about her former boss. Having served nearly a decade, she asserts her termination was unjust. Jackson’s attorneys argue she was dismissed due to an inability to collaborate and fulfill job duties. Carter seeks compensation rather than reinstatement to her former position. Opening statements were heard by the jury this afternoon.
