Wreckage from Tuskegee airman’s plane that crashed during WWII training recovered from Lake Huron
SUMMARY: A team of divers have been unravelling Black military and aviation history by searching for pieces of a World War II-era plane in Lake Huron, Michigan. The plane was flown by a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-Black air fighter squadron, and crashed during training approximately 80 years ago. The bullet-riddled propellor and hundreds of other parts, including the P-39’s 1,200-pound engine, have been recovered. Once restored, the aircraft parts will be exhibited at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum. The recovery of this wreckage is enriching the understanding of African American history.
