World’s largest equipment rental company buys Hattiesburg-based business for $1.1 billion
SUMMARY: United Rentals, the leading equipment rental company, has acquired Yak, an industrial mat manufacturer based in Mississippi, for $1.1 billion. The purchase of Yak, which includes Yak Access, Yak Mat, and New South Access & Environmental Solutions, adds roughly 600,000 mats to United Rentals’ portfolio, enhancing its specialty business offerings. President and CEO Matthew Flannery believes the deal will drive shareholder returns and provide comprehensive solutions for customers. Yak, with $171 million in EBITDA on $353 million revenue, will be funded through debt financing and United Rentals’ existing credit facilities. Yak’s CEO, Frank Bardonaro, is optimistic about the growth opportunities with United Rentals.

Yancey Engineered Solutions opening $20.8 million generator cover facility in Batesville
SUMMARY: Yancey Engineered Solutions, a division of Yancey Bros. Co., is investing $20.8 million to establish a new facility in Batesville, Mississippi. The company will create 250 jobs at its North Mississippi center, located in the former Crown Cork and Seal facility. Yancey Engineered Solutions, which specializes in designing and packaging CAT generators, will manufacture aluminum and steel enclosures and fuel tanks, primarily for data centers. State authorities, including the Mississippi Development Authority, will assist with the project. The facility is expected to be completed within three years, with job creation anticipated within five years.

Vicksburg kickstarting yearlong 200th anniversary celebration Wednesday
SUMMARY: On January 29, 2025, Vicksburg will celebrate its 200th anniversary since incorporation, marking its significance as a center for commerce and its role in the Civil War. Founded in 1811, Vicksburg, known as “The Key to the South,” is home to the Vicksburg National Military Park, established in 1899 to honor those who fought in the conflict. Sentencing date set for drunk driver who killed Canton teacher
SUMMARY: Jordan Leah Sullivan, 33, who killed beloved Mississippi teacher Tyra Small-Jackson while driving drunk, will be sentenced on February 10, facing up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated DUI. On June 22, 2024, Sullivan drove the wrong way on Interstate 55 and collided with another vehicle, resulting in Small-Jackson’s death. Her blood alcohol content was .241, and police found numerous liquor bottles inside her car. Despite her actions leading to a tragic loss, local district attorney Bubba Bramlett emphasized the lack of punishment that can replace Small-Jackson, a cherished educator and mother. Sullivan remains in custody.
