Long Beach resident revisits SS United States after 70 years
SUMMARY: The SS United States docked in Mobile for the last time on March 2nd, 2023, beginning the salvage process after a final voyage from Philadelphia. 91-year-old Norma Weed, who traveled on the ship’s maiden voyage in 1952 to visit her military husband in France, expressed her surprise at witnessing the ship again. Despite suffering from seasickness during her trip, she fondly recalled the pride of having an American ship that competed with European liners. After seeing the vessel, she received a piece of it—a bolt—which she plans to cherish and pass down to her son, reflecting on the emotional significance of the moment.
