U.S. House committee launches investigation into alleged misuse of FEMA money | National
SUMMARY: Republican members of the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security are investigating DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas for alleged misuse of FEMA funds. They claim funds intended for disaster relief are being redirected to support illegal border crossers, despite Mayorkas’ caution that FEMA may lack sufficient resources for hurricane recovery. After Hurricane Helene caused an estimated $47.5 billion in damages, FEMA allocated over $350 million for aid, with more assistance pending. The committee accuses the Biden-Harris administration of mismanaging funds, focusing on border aid instead of immediate disaster relief, and has set an Oct. 25 deadline for Mayorkas to respond.
