William Carey aiming to seize momentum of record growth
SUMMARY: William Carey University is thriving amid nationwide declines in student enrollment, achieving significant growth over the past decade. While overall enrollment in U.S. colleges has dropped by over 15%, William Carey has invested more than $175 million in improvements, contributing to its recent accolades as Mississippi’s top private university. Under the leadership of Dr. Ben Burnett, enrollment has surged, including the largest freshman class in its history. The university’s commitment to culture, community, and service underpins its mission, producing nearly 500 physicians for rural Mississippi since 2019. With continued expansion plans, William Carey aims to become a major educational institution.

Mississippi Senate passes bill to implement no-excuse early voting
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s Senate has approved the “In-Person Early Voting Act,” which would allow registered voters to cast ballots up to 15 days before an election without needing an excuse. This would replace the current 45-day absentee voting period. Supporters argue it provides convenience for voters, especially those with scheduling difficulties. However, the bill faces opposition, with concerns about litigation and resistance from many circuit clerks. Despite this, the bill passed with bipartisan support and will now move to the House. Governor Tate Reeves, however, has expressed opposition to no-excuse early voting, which is already in place in 47 states.

Mississippi House unanimously passes bill requiring transparency in seafood labeling
SUMMARY: In response to a seafood mislabeling scandal, Mississippi lawmakers are advancing House Bill 602 to enhance transparency in the seafood industry. The bill requires all seafood, including shrimp and crawfish, to display its country of origin on menus and labels. This follows the sentencing of Mary Mahoney’s Old French House and its supplier for selling imported fish as local. A study found widespread mislabeling in coastal restaurants. If passed, HB 602 will introduce fines for non-compliance, starting at $500, with penalties up to $10,000 for repeat offenders. The bill is set for Senate approval and may take effect July 1.
