Wildlife officials training new K-9 unit for search and rescue missions

SUMMARY: The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is training a new K-9 unit to aid in search and rescue missions and wildlife detection. The unit consists of four dogs, with one representative from each district of the state. The dogs are currently undergoing a three-month certification process at Camp Shelby to detect and find lost humans, as well as locate invasive and at-risk species. The department hopes to get over a decade of service from the dogs, who will focus solely on search and rescue and wildlife detection tasks. The unit is expected to be certified this fall.
