Widespread Long-Duration Power Outages Highly Likely in Tallahassee
SUMMARY: Tallahassee, Florida, is bracing for hurricane-force winds from storm Helen, predicted to hit tonight. Concerns are high among state and local officials due to the city‘s extensive tree canopy, which covers 55% of the area. Notably, 37% of this canopy is vulnerable to high winds, increasing the likelihood of widespread, prolonged power outages. The storm’s arrival at night aggravates the situation, as falling trees could pose significant risks. Officials are closely monitoring the situation as Helen approaches the region, prompting heightened readiness in Tallahassee and surrounding areas.
The Weather Channel Correspondent Justin Michaels reports from Tallahassee, Florida where he said that the tree canopy is a major concern as Hurricane Helene comes ashore and pushes north. He said that the entire Tallahassee area, 55% of the capital city has a tree canopy and 37% of that canopy does not sustain winds very well which means widespread long-duration power outages. Political analyst breaks down the big races on the Mississippi ballot
SUMMARY: Dr. Ray Michael from Jackson State University discussed the Mississippi Supreme Court race, focusing on the two leading candidates: incumbent Jim Kitchens and challenger Jenifer Branning. Branning, endorsed by the state Republican Party, has received significant financial support from insurance and banking industries, likely due to past tort reform impacts in Mississippi. Despite judges being nonpartisan, Branning’s campaign has emphasized her identity as a “constitutional conservative,” reflecting a shift in political advertising in the state. This approach aims to clarify her judicial philosophy without directly addressing policy issues, aligning with conservative judicial figures like Justice Scalia.
Dr. Ray Mikell, with Jackson State University, tells us what races we should be watching.
