Why is the Mid-South known as the 'chronic disease belt' of the U.S.?
SUMMARY: The Midsouth region of the U.S. is known as the “chronic disease belt,” with alarming rates of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. According to UTHSC, 73% of adults in this area are overweight or obese, contributing to numerous health issues. For example, Michael Mian, who experienced a diabetic coma, was shocked to learn of his type 2 diabetes diagnosis. Health experts attribute these high rates to unhealthy behaviors and limited access to nutritious food. Dr. Jake Lancaster emphasizes adopting four health pillars: a balanced diet, physical activity, adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful habits. Community support programs, like Baptist’s health coaching, can help individuals manage their health effectively.
Our part of the country has higher rates of disability and death from heart attack, stroke, cancer, kidney failure and arthritis than anywhere else in the nation, according to statistics from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. SUMMARY: Investigators from Tennessee are testifying against Bruce Mendenhall, a truck stop serial killer on trial for murder in Indianapolis. Retired Nashville Metro Police Sergeant Pat Postiglione described encountering Mendenhall at a truck stop in 2007 while investigating a murder. Postiglione noticed the truck’s yellow color and linked it to a previous case. During the search, police found blood-stained evidence, including women’s clothing, a debit card, and a phone belonging to the victim. Mendenhall, convicted of two murders in Tennessee, faces more charges in Alabama. The trial is nearing its conclusion with additional testimonies.
One of the witnesses called to the stand was the Metro police sergeant who caught the suspect at a Nashville truck stop 17 years ago.

‘Safe Stays’ app creates ease finding shelter, hotels for domestic violence victims

Tennessee residents, National Guard to play role in Trump inauguration
SUMMARY: Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, with many Tennesseans present in Washington, D.C. About 150 soldiers from the Tennessee National Guard traveled to support security during the event. Maj. Gen. Warner Ross expressed pride in the Guardsmen’s participation in this historic moment. Initially, the Stewarts Creek High School band was set to perform in the Inaugural Parade, which was canceled due to weather. However, they have since been invited to perform in a modified parade, and Principal Clark Harrell celebrated this opportunity for the students.
