When guns are used in a crime, they can often end up back on the streets

Currently, the department possesses around 8,000 guns, occasionally trading them with licensed dealers to reduce taxpayer costs, as they cannot destroy firearms per state law. However, tracking these weapons post-trade is challenging. Notably, firearms involved in homicide investigations are retained indefinitely. In 2022, firearms accounted for 75% of murders and 62% of robberies in Tennessee, highlighting their prevalence in violent crimes despite the low likelihood of purchasing a gun tied to a crime.

A Tennessee law prohibits law enforcement agencies from destroying confiscated weapons. Many choose to sell or trade the gun with an authorized firearms dealer.
