What You Need to Know About China War Time Exercises Near Taiwan

SUMMARY: China is conducting large military exercises around Taiwan as a warning against the island’s pursuit of independence. These drills involve an aircraft carrier, warships, and aircraft, a response to Taiwan’s President William Li’s refusal to recognize Taiwan as part of the People’s Republic of China. The exercises are described by Chinese as a deterrent to Taiwan’s “separatist forces.” Taiwan’s defense ministry reports 125 Chinese military aircraft and 177 warships involved, calling the maneuvers an unreasonable provocation. The U.S. Department criticized China’s actions as unwarranted, particularly in light of Li’s recent speech advocating for cooperation with China.

China employed a record 125 aircraft, as well as its Liaoning aircraft carrier and ships, in large-scale military exercises surrounding Taiwan and its outlying islands Monday, simulating the sealing off of key ports in a move that underscores the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait, officials said.

China made clear it was to punish Taiwan’s president for rejecting Beijing’s claim of sovereignty over the self-governed island.
