What to know about Trump’s calls to make Canada the ’51st state’
SUMMARY: President-elect Donald Trump has reiterated his suggestion that Canada should become the 51st U.S. state, following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s resignation. While some dismiss Trump’s idea as posturing or joking, others worry it signals an attempt to expand U.S. influence. Trump has also floated ideas like acquiring Greenland and controlling the Panama Canal. The merger proposal is highly unpopular in Canada, with 82% of Canadians opposed. Trump’s comments may reflect efforts to increase U.S. power, though experts are unsure how seriously to take his threats. The shift in leadership in Canada complicates the response to Trump’s actions.

Longshoremen reach tentative agreement with ports, shippers, averting a potential strike
SUMMARY: U.S. longshoremen have reached a tentative six-year contract agreement with the U.S. Maritime Alliance, avoiding a potential strike that could hurt the economy. The deal, finalized ahead of a January 15 deadline, aims to protect union jobs while allowing ports on the East and Gulf coasts to modernize with new technology, enhancing safety and efficiency. Details remain confidential for union member review, with ratification expected to take weeks. While addressing concerns over automation potentially displacing workers, the contract mandates hiring more staff during modernization. The agreement is seen as beneficial for both workers and the broader economy.
