West Point neighborhood festival takes home state award
SUMMARY: The Cottrell Street Music and Heritage Festival in West Point, Mississippi, recently won the Outstanding New Small Event Under 5,000 at the Mississippi Main Street Awards, bringing renewed attention to a neighborhood that has been revitalizing over the past three years. Historically a bustling hub for the black community from the 1940s to the 1980s, the area declined due to drugs and crime. Mayor Rod Bobo aims to honor its significance as the center of African-American business. Eleven Main Streets from various areas, including Aberdeen and Tupelo, also received awards. MDOT to make improvements at Brandon intersection where teen died in crash
SUMMARY: Following the tragic death of 18-year-old Greyson Huff in a crash at the intersection of Highway 18 and Sunset Drive in Brandon, Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced safety improvements. These enhancements include rumble strips, a new flashing LED stop sign, and flashing intersection warning signs. Despite community requests for a traffic signal, state engineers determined it was not warranted due to data indicating that signals can make intersections more dangerous. MDOT aims to improve visibility and reduce speeds, with the enhancements expected to be completed next week.
