Interview: Nurse Practitioner Paige Sanders explains Parkinson's Disease
SUMMARY: Retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre announced his Parkinson’s disease diagnosis while testifying about welfare reform in Congress. Neurology consultant Paige Sanders discussed Parkinson’s, a progressive movement disorder caused by the breakdown of nerve cells in the brain, leading to decreased dopamine levels. Symptoms include resting tremors, shuffling gait, stiffness, and difficulties with daily tasks. While head injuries may increase athletes’ risk for Parkinson’s, most cases are idiopathic. There’s no cure, and treatments mainly involve medications and therapies to manage symptoms.
