Black ice poses threat to drivers in wake of unprecedented snow
SUMMARY: In dangerously cold conditions, it’s safest to stay indoors, but if you must go outside, be cautious of slippery road and parking lot conditions. As snow and ice melt, they can refreeze, creating hazardous black ice that may appear dry but is extremely slippery. Sheriff Chip Hughes advises drivers to ensure their vehicles are well-maintained and to drive at reduced speeds to avoid accidents. He urges anyone who becomes stranded to call for help, as they’ve received numerous reports of vehicles losing traction. Stay vigilant and careful to avoid falls on icy surfaces.
With snowfall comes danger for drivers as the leftover snow and ice melt and refreeze on the roadways.
Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said you should be cautious about what’s underneath the blanket of snow.
“Everything that melts today, the temperatures are going to stay below freezing which means the roads are going to be slick,” Sheriff Hughes said.

Immigrant detention beds may be maxed out as Trump moves to deport ‘millions and millions’
SUMMARY: Former President Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations rely heavily on securing funding for additional immigration detention centers. With approximately 11.7 million undocumented individuals in the U.S., Trump’s administration aims to expand detention capacity significantly, necessitating a budget increase of at least $26.9 billion for 110,000 additional beds. His strategy includes enhanced military involvement and bypassing current migrant release practices. Despite limited existing detention infrastructure, advocacy groups express concerns over the implications of a militarized approach to immigration detention, arguing it could compromise safety and military readiness. Congress ultimately controls funding for these initiatives, sparking ongoing debates.
