Weather Why: Why do we give names to hurricanes?

The practice began in 1953, as names are easier for the public to remember, especially when multiple storms occur simultaneously. Names are assigned by the World Meteorological Organization and can include names from various languages, reflecting the global nature of these storms. Names are reused every six years unless associated with significant destruction, leading to their retirement. Examples of retired names include , Ida, and Laura, all linked to considerable devastation in the Coast region.
