Weather Why: Why do the leaves change colors?

SUMMARY: As autumn approaches, leaves change color due to reduced sunlight and chlorophyll breakdown. Meteorologist Taylor Graham explains that in areas like South Mississippi, this process occurs later than in northern regions, with peak foliage typically seen around mid to late November. The vibrant colors—orange, red, and yellow—appear in conditions of dry late summer and warm autumn days contrasted with cool nights. While those in the Northeast experience early color changes, South Mississippi may not see significant changes until later, influenced by factors like drought and weather conditions. Travel north for the best foliage views in October.

With the color of the leaves changing, Meteorologist Taylor Graham joins us to explain what causes this to happen.

www.youtube.com – WLOX News – 2024-11-21 08:54:12

SUMMARY: Buxy Upper Elementary School, originally built in 1961 and serving various educational levels, is being considered for a new purpose as the community evaluates a new location for elementary students. Superintendent Buo emphasized the need for a modern facility, stating the current building, designed for high school students, is unsuitable for younger grades. Two potential sites are being considered: next to the existing school and the former Michelle Junior High property on Popsy Road. Community sentiment leans toward the latter option. Buo assured that the historic current building would remain standing for district and community needs. Final site decisions will be made by December 4th.

A public forum will be held Dec. 4th at 5 p.m. in the Biloxi Schools Performing Arts Center.
