Minimal rainfall brings mixed bag
SUMMARY: Rainfall has been slow to return to the Pine Belt, alleviating drought but presenting challenges for local farmers. In Pearl River County, cattle farmer Jeff Easterling mentions increased feeding costs and adjustments to livestock diets due to the drought. He anticipates waiting three weeks before fully grazing cattle. Conversely, soybean farmer John Corley found the drought beneficial for his recent harvest, enabling efficient harvesting and pest control. Experts note that optimal soybean yields need consistent rainfall during late summer and early fall for maturation. Overall, the drought presents mixed outcomes for the local agriculture sector.
