Water crisis in Mississippi capital developed during failures in oversight, watchdog says

SUMMARY: A U.S. EPA report revealed that poor oversight by state and federal agencies led to a significant water crisis in Jackson, Mississippi, leaving many residents without safe drinking water for weeks in 2021 and 2022. The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) failed to adequately document issues in Jackson’s water system or alert city officials about significant problems. Consequences included over 750 boil-water notices from 2016-2020 and 7,300 water distribution pipe breaks. A federal judge appointed an independent administrator for the system in late 2022 after the crisis highlighted long-standing operational issues and poor water quality concerns in the city.
