Wastewater operators: Please keep sludge out of drains
SUMMARY: Water operators in the Pine Belt are cautioning residents about washing fats, oils, and grease (FOG) down drains, which is a leading cause of sewer issues. Wastewater Digest identifies items like butter and salad dressing as culprits. Delaney Dukes from WDS followed Glendale Utility District's James Pierce to inspect lift stations clogged with hardened FOG, which block sewer lines and create maintenance problems. This hardened grease can also clog home pipes, leading to costly plumbing repairs. Pierce urges the community to dispose of FOG in trash containers instead of drains to prevent such issues statewide.
