Wake County counts 3 ballots of voters who died before Election Day
SUMMARY: During a board meeting, Steve Amber highlighted that out of 70 challenges, 45 involved deceased voters. Despite some ballots being allowed, three votes were counted because they were legally cast during early voting before the voters died. The daughter of a deceased veteran emphasized her father’s pride in voting and urged the board not to invalidate his last act. Member Greg Flynn supported counting those votes, arguing that the law must accommodate legitimate cases. However, the board ultimately decided against counting 42 votes, citing legal requirements, while discussing concerns about potential legal repercussions and future legislative changes.
Following the law isn’t a clear-cut process in such cases. Proponents want the State Legislature to take up the issue.

Trump directive will keep promise made to Lumbee Tribe | North Carolina
SUMMARY: Full federal recognition for the Lumbee Tribe, the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River, is gaining momentum under President Donald Trump. During a recent statement, Trump expressed his support for the tribe and issued a memorandum requesting the Secretary of the Interior to propose a plan for their full recognition. Historically, the Lumbees were recognized by North Carolina in 1885 and received limited recognition from Congress in 1956 without the benefits of other federally recognized tribes. A bill, known as the Lumbee Fairness Act, has been introduced in both congressional chambers, advocating for the tribe’s rights and services.

In times of crisis, states have few tools to fight misinformation • NC Newsline
SUMMARY: As wildfires swept through Los Angeles, officials faced a surge of misinformation online, including AI-generated images and absurd rumors about firefighting methods. Despite the chaos, Meta announced the discontinuation of its fact-checking program, raising concerns about state responses to online falsehoods. California recently enacted a law requiring social media platforms to remove deceptive content related to elections swiftly. However, this law faces legal challenges over First Amendment rights. Experts warn that misinformation can severely impact disaster responses, urging the public to enhance their information literacy. California is also integrating media literacy into school curricula to combat this issue.
