SUMMARY: Jaylen Burns, a 21-year-old student at Jackson State University, was shot and killed at the University Point Apartments. The Jackson State community held a vigil to honor Burns, who was described as a bright, ambitious, and kind young man. Acting President Elayne Hayes Anthony expressed condolences to those who knew and loved him. Burns was a senior majoring in industrial technology and was the Collegiate 100 Chapter President. His father, Jason Burns, said that Jaylen was not a violent person and was trying to break up a fight when he was shot. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.

Sheriff Ed Hawkin condemned the case as “one of the most disgusting” he has ever encountered, highlighting the betrayal of trust as foster parents are meant to nurture and protect children. The investigation began in August when the foster dad and the teen were reported missing; she was later found and disclosed the repeated sexual assaults during a forensic interview. The teen is now in custody of child protective services, which is struggling with a shortage of foster homes, exacerbated by such horrific incidents.

It’s one of the most disgusting cases the sheriff in Lowndes County said he has ever seen.

According to manager and partner Lori Herring, business has slowed down significantly at the Tupelo location this year, prompting the decision to close the establishment.
