Viewers react to slight Social Security benefits increase
SUMMARY: Retirees are set to receive a 2.5% increase in their Social Security checks for 2025, amounting to about $50 more monthly, bringing the estimated average to $1,976 starting in January. While any increase is positive, many recipients express dissatisfaction, noting that the adjustment is significantly smaller than past increases of 3.2% and nearly 9% in prior years. Financial expert Dr. Brian Blank explains the adjustment aligns with recent inflation rates, around 2.4-2.5%. However, advocacy groups argue that the government‘s cost-of-living adjustments have often failed to adequately reflect the true inflation affecting seniors.
The Social Security cost of living adjustment will increase at the beginning of next year.

Rail service in Wayne County could be restored
SUMMARY: The Rail Authority of East Mississippi is reviving a long-defunct railroad system in Wayne County to facilitate nationwide product shipping. The project aims to establish a 56-mile line connecting existing short-line railroads between Meridian and the Gulf Coast, enhancing economic advantages for local industries such as poultry, grain, forestry, and construction. Expected to cost $500,000, it could create 6,000 new jobs. Officials are currently reviewing environmental and logistical studies before seeking federal funding. The project would improve transportation costs and connect vital ports for shipping goods northward and to Mexico, with construction anticipated to begin by 2034.
