Veteran gets Purple Heart decades after service
SUMMARY: A Marine veteran, who was wounded in Vietnam and missed receiving a Purple Heart for decades, was finally honored with the award recently. During combat in September 1968, he was shot in the head at just 19 years old, sustaining serious injuries that led to over a year in the hospital. Although his discharge paperwork overlooked his Purple Heart, efforts from the Marines and Senator James Lankford’s office rectified this error. The ceremony took place at the Norman Veterans Home on Veterans Day, where fellow Marines and family celebrated this long-overdue recognition, honoring his service and sacrifice.

4Warn Storm Team tracking wildfire risk Friday
SUMMARY: The 4Warn Storm Team is monitoring extreme wildfire risks in Oklahoma due to expected high winds, with gusts reaching nearly hurricane force. Conditions are extremely dry across the state, prompting a red flag warning for 76 of 77 counties from 7 AM to 10 PM tomorrow. While current temperatures are in the 60s and 70s, a system approaching from the southwest could bring severe thunderstorms, potentially causing power outages and minor damage. The team emphasizes the urgency of this severe fire danger, especially in western Oklahoma, as humidity levels drop dramatically.

The 4Warn Storm Team is keeping an eye on strong winds and potential wildfire risk for Friday.

New layoffs at NOAA
SUMMARY: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will cut an additional 10% of its workforce, affecting over 1,000 employees, following previous layoffs of nearly 900 probationary staff. The agency, deemed underfunded and understaffed, plays a vital role in weather forecasting, storm warnings, and vital safety information, including climate data and solar flare tracking. Recent layoffs have led to protests due to uncertainties in the workforce. Former NOAA administrator Rick Spinrad noted that these cuts are being made without clear guidance on essential services, raising concerns about the impact on public safety and the future of NOAA’s operations.
