USM’s Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival to kick off on April 12-14
The University of Southern Mississippi’s (USM) annual Fay B. Kaigler Children’s Book Festival is set to kick off in under a month in Hattiesburg.
During the festival, awarding-winning and bestselling writer and artist Gene Luen-Yang will be presented with the Southern Miss Medallion for his work in several iconic works. Yang is the bestselling writer and artist behind American Born ChineseBoxers & Saintsthe Avatar: the Last Airbender comics, Dragon Hoops, and Superman Smashes the Klan.
American Born Chinese, Gene’s first graphic novel, was the first-ever graphic novel to be named a finalist for the National Book Award. The book went on to win the Printz Award, the ALA’s award for the best young adult book published in a year, and an Eisner Award, one of the most prestigious honors in the comic book world.
Karen Rowell, coordinator of the festival, says she’s eager to recognize Yang for his contributions to the genre of children’s literature.

Ole Miss women get pair of double-doubles and roll to 83-65 March Madness win over Ball State
SUMMARY: Mississippi coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin found solace in returning to a different arena in Waco, Texas, following a disappointing previous tournament experience. The No. 5 seed Ole Miss Rebels redeemed themselves with an 83-65 victory over 12th-seeded Ball State in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. Starr Jacobs led the Rebels with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Kennedy Todd-Williams and Madison Scott each scored 15 points. Ole Miss dominated rebounding, leading 52-32, and will face fourth-seeded Baylor next. Coach McPhee-McCuin noted the team’s evolution since their last visit and the significance of playing in Texas, where Jacobs feels at home.
