SUMMARY: Karina Ledezma, a senior at The University of Southern Mississippi, conducted research on the growth patterns of seed oysters exposed to low oxygen and pH levels in the Mississippi Sound for her honors thesis. Her project was supported by the School of Ocean Science and Engineering and involved studying the effects of ocean acidification on oysters. Ledezma worked with her advisor, Dr. Kim De Mutsert, and graduate student Abiola Obafemi to study the survival and growth of oysters in different water conditions. Her research led to the discovery that oyster shells dissolve in low oxygen conditions, affecting their condition index. Ledezma plans to continue her research in marine science after graduation.
