USM fires up furnace to mold molten art
SUMMARY: At USM Southern M, the annual iron pour event brought students, faculty, and the community together to melt and pour metal into molds. Participants had the chance to carve scratch plates, which were used to cast iron blocks. Led by Sculpture Professor Jennifer Torres, the event emphasized the importance of collaboration and teamwork. Torres explained that art can be a solo endeavor, but events like this teach students the value of working together, setting aside egos, and contributing to a collective effort. The molten metal used in the event reached nearly 3,000 degrees.
