USM Anthropology Participates in Historic Mississippi Cemetery Restoration Project
SUMMARY: The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Pass Road Elementary School, and The Historical Society of Gulfport collaborated to restore and preserve the historic Old Mississippi City Cemetery. Students learned about gravesite cleaning and identified various grave materials and iconography. This cleanup, led by Dr. Marie Danforth from USM, aimed to engage students with their community while teaching about local history. The cemetery, an essential railroad center in the 19th century, has been used since 1822. Funding for the project was provided by the Southern Miss School of Social Science and Global Studies, along with grants to support educational initiatives.

Helene lashes the South with wind and sheets of rain. Millions are without power
SUMMARY: Hurricane Helene made landfall near the Aucilla River in Florida, resembling the impact of Hurricane Idalia from the previous year. As the hurricane crossed into Georgia, residents, including a family in Valdosta, sought shelter amid widespread power outages. Helene weakened to a tropical storm with maximum winds of 70 mph, moving north and causing flash flood warnings as it struck southern states. Over 1.2 million homes lost power, and curfews were instituted in certain areas for safety. Helene is the eighth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which is expected to be above average this year.
