UNT professors speak out about policy preventing in-class voter registration presentations
SUMMARY: Professors at the University of North Texas (UNT) are concerned about a policy prohibiting outside groups from discussing voter registration in classrooms, which they claim is a departure from previous practices. UNT officials state the policy aligns with Texas law that bans political use of university resources. Faculty argue that this restriction impacts their teaching, as many have welcomed nonpartisan groups to discuss voter registration for years. The controversy arises amid a polarized political climate and scrutiny over election processes. UNT will still permit voter registration efforts outside of class and will serve as a polling site for the upcoming election.
The university told its instructors the classroom is not the place for groups to share information about the registration process. But UNT insists it is not a new policy.
