Union County has the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 1.8%
SUMMARY: Union County in Mississippi currently has an impressively low unemployment rate of 1.8%, one of the lowest in the state. This has led to an improved workforce participation rate and is benefiting small businesses in the area. Business owners, such as Christy Jumper and the president of Kevin Charles Furniture, have reported an increase in sales and a positive outlook due to the low unemployment rate. In fact, the entire Northeast Mississippi region is doing better than other areas in the state, with 11 local counties having unemployment rates at or below the state average of 2.6%. The national unemployment rate is currently at 3.5%.

SUMMARY: The Stewpot Opportunity Center in Jackson is responding to dangerously cold temperatures by extending its hours to 22 per day and providing shelter for up to 30 people. The center ensures guests receive food, clothing, hygiene items, hot meals, showers, and rest, with activities like movies to help them stay comfortable. Director Javonda Stanton emphasizes that it is inhumane for people to be left outside in the cold, which can lead to conditions like hypothermia and frostbite. The city is also reopening a temporary shelter at Champion Gym in partnership with Shower Power for those in need.

SUMMARY: The 2025 Magnolia Classic AKC Dog Show is being held this weekend at the Mississippi Coliseum.
