Undocumented immigrant arrested in Harrison County for trafficking fentanyl
SUMMARY: Francisco Antonio Castillo Mendoza, a Mexican national from Sonora, was arrested in Harrison County for fentanyl trafficking. Upon being pulled over for careless driving in a Domino’s Pizza parking lot, his suspicious behavior led deputies to conduct a canine-assisted vehicle scan. The search revealed over 100,000 fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills. Investigations confirmed Mendoza’s illegal residency status in the U.S., prompting immigration violation charges and assistance from U.S. Border Patrol and DEA. Mendoza faces aggravated trafficking charges with a $100,000 bond, but is not bondable due to the immigration detainer.

‘Ole Miss basketball isn’t going anywhere’: Rebels stave off attempt by Texas A&M to poach Chris Beard
SUMMARY: Chris Beard, Ole Miss basketball head coach, recently turned down a lucrative offer from Texas A&M after the Aggies sought him as their next leader. Despite a tempting $7 million salary and significant NIL contributions, Beard chose to stay in Oxford, thanks to the support of athletics director Keith Carter. Carter’s proven ability to retain talent, along with fan and institutional backing, helped Ole Miss secure Beard’s commitment. Under Beard, the Rebels are expected to field one of their best rosters in history next season, building on a strong 44-24 record and advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

Mississippi legislative session to end without lawmakers passing budget
SUMMARY: The 2025 Mississippi legislative session ended without passing a $7 billion budget due to internal conflicts among Republican officials. The House sought a brief extension to address budget bills, but the Senate did not meet the deadline. House Speaker Jason White criticized longstanding practices, advocating for a transparent budget process, while Senate leaders expressed frustration over the House’s absence during crucial discussions. With no budget finalized, Governor Tate Reeves must call a special session to ensure funding by June 30, or face government shutdowns affecting over 100,000 employees. Special sessions incur substantial taxpayer costs, exceeding $100,000 per day.
