U.S. shrimping industry faces headwinds from imports, federal neglect | Louisiana
SUMMARY: DuLac, once a thriving shrimping town, now faces decline due to increased foreign shrimp imports, which make up over 90% of U.S. consumption. U.S. shrimp production fell by 48% from 2002 to 2022. Imported shrimp, often subsidized by foreign governments, undercut domestic prices, making it difficult for U.S. shrimpers to compete. Local shrimpers rely on docks to handle their catch, but lower prices, driven by imports, threaten their livelihoods. Legal actions against countries like India and Vietnam seek fairer competition. Rising fuel costs add to the burden, further hurting U.S. shrimpers and their communities.Â

Murrill calls for an end to New Orleans consent decree | Louisiana
SUMMARY: Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has urged a federal judge to terminate the 12-year consent decree governing the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD), asserting it has become counterproductive to public safety. Murrill noted that the city has fulfilled its obligations under the decree, which was established in 2012 to reform NOPD practices. She claimed the decree has incurred $150 million in costs, hindering the department amid dwindling officer numbers and recruitment. Critics argue that the decree deters recruitment and worsens staffing shortages. Murrill called for restoring local control and initiating the process to conclude the decree.

5th Circuit upholds block of Ten Commandments law | Louisiana
SUMMARY: Louisiana’s plan to mandate the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms remains in legal uncertainty after a federal appeals court upheld a block on the law. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied the state’s request to lift the injunction issued by Judge John deGravelles, who deemed the law unconstitutional. Supporters argue it reflects the Ten Commandments’ historical influence on American law, while critics contend it violates the First Amendment. A hearing is scheduled for Jan. 23, and questions remain about enforcement in districts not involved in the lawsuit. The injunction currently affects five school districts. Â
