Biden rejects Nippon Steel's proposed deal to acquire US Steel
SUMMARY: President Joe Biden has officially blocked the proposed $15 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel by Japan’s Nippon Steel, reaffirming his commitment to prioritize American steel companies. Despite the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) failing to reach a consensus on national security risks, Biden emphasized the importance of maintaining U.S.-owned steelmaking capacities. Concerns from labor unions about job security and financial transparency also influenced his decision. While the acquisition had supporters, including some lawmakers, Biden’s rejection may strain U.S.-Japan relations, especially as Japan is a key ally and major holder of U.S. debt.
