Tupelo dealing with rise in homelessness
SUMMARY: Tupelo is experiencing a significant rise in homelessness, with 82 individuals reported, a 50% increase from last year. Recent city actions included removing a downtown homeless encampment, leading to concerns about belongings being discarded. The Salvation Army’s cold weather shelter remains closed unless temperatures hit 20° or less, due to rising utility costs and security requirements. City leaders have acknowledged the problem and are collaborating under a homeless task force to discuss solutions aimed at providing long-term stability, highlighting the importance of building trust with the homeless community while recognizing resource challenges and limited shelter space.
Homeless numbers have been on the rise in Tupelo this year.
