Trump to order shutdown of the Education Department. What does it do?
SUMMARY: President Trump plans to sign an executive order to shut down the Education Department, fulfilling a long-standing Republican goal. While Secretary Linda McMahon will manage the closure, the task will likely require congressional action. The department oversees significant federal financial aid and regulates vital services for students. Trump aims to redefine its roles, targeting federal funding linked to “critical race theory” and promoting school choice. His administration has already halved the department’s staff and cut contracts deemed “woke.” Key functions like student loans, civil rights enforcement, and accreditation processes are under review, with potential shifts in oversight to other agencies.

Trump expected to issue order that will begin shutdown of Education Department
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is expected to sign an executive order today to initiate the shutdown of the Department of Education, transferring authority over schools to individual states. The order will instruct federal officials to take necessary steps for closure, while ensuring that essential services like student loans remain intact. Trump has criticized the department as wasteful, and while state control may increase over funding and curricula in Georgia, advocates warn this could reduce federal oversight for vulnerable students. Ultimately, the complete closure of the Department will require Congressional approval, the feasibility of which is currently uncertain.
