SUMMARY: A winter storm on Tuesday brought unprecedented snowfall to the Gulf Coast, with cities breaking long-standing records. Milton, Florida saw 9 inches, more than double the state’s previous snowfall record of 4 inches. New Orleans recorded 10 inches, and Mobile, Alabama, saw 8 inches. Northern Florida, including Tallahassee, experienced heavy snow, with some areas nearing all-time snowfall records. The unusual weather was caused by a displaced Polar Vortex and a stalled front, which allowed cold air to move south, while warm, moist air created snow due to “overrunning” effects.
