Trump administration plans to cut 80,000 employees from Veterans Affairs, according to internal memo
SUMMARY: The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to cut over 80,000 jobs to return to 2019 staffing levels, according to an internal memo. This reorganization aims to address veterans’ needs, including those affected by burn pits under the 2022 PACT Act. Concerns have arisen about the impact of these layoffs on veteran services, with criticism from both Democratic and Republican lawmakers regarding the lack of communication prior to these changes. Veterans groups are worried about potential service disruptions, as cuts might lead to delays in care for millions of veterans who rely on the VA.

Federal cuts halt major Arbor Day tree-planting effort in St. Louis
SUMMARY: A major tree-planting initiative in St. Louis has been halted due to federal funding cuts, affecting two grants intended for Arbor Day activities. Beyond Housing, a local nonprofit, was set to plant 1,000 trees with grants from the Arbor Day Foundation and the CDC, both of which were rescinded last month. These cuts not only impact the tree-planting effort but also threaten the work of community health workers aiding families with chronic conditions. Beyond Housing’s president, Chris Krehmeyer, expressed concern over the long-term impact on neighborhood health and resilience, urging for additional support from local businesses and communities.
