Trump accepts nomination at RNC, as Democrats call on Biden to step down | Facing South Florida
SUMMARY: Jim DeFiti discusses the turbulent political landscape in South Florida following an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. At the Republican convention in Milwaukee, Trump selected Ohio Senator JD Vance, known for his stance on abortion bans. Despite a brief unifying tone during his speech, Trump quickly reverted to familiar grievance rhetoric. Meanwhile, concerns about President Biden’s electability persist. In Florida, abortion rights are at the forefront with Amendment 4 aiming to secure those rights, countering Governor DeSantis’ bureaucratic tactics to undermine it. Democratic Senator Lauren Book criticizes the governor’s misleading statements about the amendment’s effects.

In this week’s edition of Facing South Florida:
The Republican party re-energized this past week at the Republican National Convention, where Former President Donald Trump spoke for the first time since surviving an assassination attempt. CBS News Miami’s Jim DeFede spoke with Evan Power, the Chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, at the convention in Milwaukee, just prior to Trump’s speech.
Plus, DeFede speaks one-on-one with State Sen. Lauren Book about Governor Ron DeSantis’ efforts to fight the abortion issue set to appear on the Florida ballot this November.

ICE admits ‘administrative error’ in deporting Maryland man to El Salvador
SUMMARY: The Trump administration acknowledged mistakenly deporting Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a Maryland man with protected legal status, to a dangerous El Salvador prison, CECOT. Despite an immigration judge ruling in 2019 against his deportation due to a likelihood of gang persecution, ICE cited “administrative error” for the deportation. Abrego Garcia, who fled gang violence in El Salvador, faces allegations of gang ties, but advocates claim no evidence supports these accusations. Although his wife recognized him in prison photographs, the administration is contesting his return to the U.S., citing safety concerns and purported gang affiliation.

Local hotel, motel owners seeing fewer Canadians
SUMMARY: Hotel and motel owners in South Florida are seeing a drop in Canadian snowbird visitors, especially French Canadians, due to rising political tensions between the U.S. and Canada over tariffs and immigration. Richard Cleve, who owns 10 properties in Hollywood, Florida, reports 79 vacant rooms and says peer pressure in Canada is discouraging travel to the U.S. Some Canadians are choosing other destinations like Cuba instead. While Cleve misses his regulars, he’s renting to Americans in the meantime. He remains hopeful relations will improve and Canadians will return. Despite the dip, business remains steady for now with domestic guests.

South Florida hotels and motels are seeing less Canadian tourists.

Judge pauses Trump administration plans to end temporary legal protections for Venezuelans
SUMMARY: A federal judge in San Francisco temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s plan to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 350,000 Venezuelans, just a week before their protections were set to expire. Judge Edward Chen ruled that ending TPS would cause irreparable harm and disrupt lives, families, and the U.S. economy. The case, filed by the National TPS Alliance, argues that the actions of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem were unauthorized and discriminatory. Noem had also planned to end TPS for 250,000 additional Venezuelans in September. The ruling applies nationwide, giving the government one week to file an appeal.
