SUMMARY: Attention is focused on a disturbance in the Western Caribbean, now with a 60% chance of formation. There are additional areas of interest in the Atlantic, with other disturbances showing 10% to 30% chances of development. The main system is likely to develop near the Yucatan and will be influenced by high-pressure systems and warm Gulf waters, promoting strengthening. Two potential tracks are emerging based on different models, with increasing agreement on a possible formation that could impact the Louisiana-Alabama Gulf Coast. The Storm Team will monitor and provide updates as the situation evolves throughout the week.

A fourth tropical disturbance formed in the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, as the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season hits peak season. A tropical depression could form late next week in the Gulf of Mexico from a potential disturbance in the Caribbean Sea. If it becomes a storm, it would be known as Tropical Storm Helene, the eighth named storm of the 2024 season.

Federal judge questions whether EPA move to rapidly cancel ‘green bank’ grants was legal

www.news4jax.com – Michael Phillis, Associated Press – 2025-04-02 16:15:00

SUMMARY: A federal judge questioned whether the EPA violated the law by terminating $20 billion in grants to nonprofits for a green bank, accusing the agency of bypassing proper procedures and raising unfounded claims of fraud. The nonprofits, including Climate United Fund, sued the EPA after it froze the funds, arguing it hindered their operations. Judge Tanya Chutkan noted the lack of substantial evidence for the EPA’s actions. The government defends its decision as a legitimate response to oversight concerns and policy shifts, but the nonprofits contend the EPA’s actions were unlawful and politically motivated.

SUMMARY: Nicholas John Roske of California will plead guilty to attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June 2022. Arrested near Kavanaugh’s Maryland home with weapons and zip ties, Roske was reportedly motivated by the leaked draft opinion to overturn *Roe v. He will plead guilty without a deal with prosecutors and faces life in prison. A hearing is expected soon. A trial was scheduled for June 9, pending no plea.

Fine will replace Mike Waltz. In District 1, Florida CFO Jimmy Petronis won with 57% of the vote, taking over Matt Gaetz’s vacated seat. Randy Fine won Tuesday’s special election for a vacant congressional seat that the president carried by 30 points less than five months ago. The seat opened up after Mike Waltz was tapped to be Trump’s national security adviser in what was widely seen then as a move without much political risk. Fine defeated Democrat challenger Josh Weil. Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis defeated his challenger, Gay Valimont, to fill former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s seat.
