Tropical Storm Helene forms in Gulf of Mexico, heads toward Florida
SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Helene has formed in the Gulf of Mexico, with maximum sustained winds reaching 45 mph. Located about 170 miles southeast of western Cuba, Helene is expected to intensify into a hurricane as it moves northwest toward the Big Bend region of Florida. Though Mississippi will not face direct impacts, rain and wind from the storm will affect the state, particularly northern areas, while coastal waters may see 2-4 foot waves and winds gusting up to 20 mph. The storm could reach a Category 3 level by landfall.
