SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Moulton formed earlier today, with winds at 40 mph, moving north-northeast at 3 mph. It is expected to strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane by 1 a.m. Monday, then rapidly increase to a Category 2 and potentially Category 3 by Tuesday afternoon before making landfall. While the storm will create stronger rip currents along the Gulf Coast, Alabama will be unaffected due to a cold front. Meteorologist Grant Skinner gives an update on the tropical activity in the Atlantic Basin. The News 5 First Alert Storm Team is tracking Kirk and Leslie which are both hurricanes in the central Atlantic, but these do not pose a threat to our area. There is a new area off the west coast of Africa that has a low chance of formation, and it also does not pose a threat. The last system is Tropical Storm Milton in the western Gulf of Mexico. It is forecast to become a major hurricane before making landfall along the west coast of Florida bringing significant impacts to the FL peninsula. A cold front will keep this system on that east/northeast track, so no direct impacts are expected for the News 5 area. Rough surf and gusty winds will still be possible as this system passes far to our south next week.

SUMMARY: Several Navy veterans will embark on a 500-mile cycling trip to Gulf Shores, starting tomorrow at 9 AM from the Space and Rocket Center. The week-long journey, known as the Panorama 500, began as a reunion for the Naval Academy class of 1983 and evolved into a charitable mission. Participants are fundraising for various veterans’ organizations, with one veteran highlighting a local charity in Huntsville that supports veterans throughout Northern Alabama. The cycling team is scheduled to arrive in Gulf Shores on October 11th.

Navy veterans will begin their 500-mile journey from Huntsville to Orange Beach on Saturday, October 5.
