Trio of Mississippi business organizations eyeing future merger
SUMMARY: Three Mississippi organizations—the Mississippi Economic Council (MEC), Mississippi Manufacturers Association (MMA), and the Business and Industry Political Education Committee (BIPEC)—are collaborating to form a unified body called the Business Alignment 2026 initiative. The merger aims to enhance resource efficiency and promote all sectors of the state’s economy. The decision, inspired by discussions during the COVID-19 pandemic, has been approved by each organization’s board. MEC focuses on long-term economic growth, MMA advocates for manufacturing, and BIPEC protects free enterprise interests. The initiative will include statewide listening sessions and assessments to ensure alignment and strengthen the business community’s voice in Mississippi.

Mississippi’s agricultural leaders call for continuing resolution to be passed by Congress
SUMMARY: As the Friday deadline to avoid a government shutdown approaches, Mississippi farmers are urging lawmakers to pass a stopgap measure. President-elect Donald Trump rejected a bipartisan plan that included $21 billion in disaster relief and $10 billion in economic assistance for farmers, along with an extension of the F.A.R.M. Act. Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation President Mike McCormick emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the challenges farmers face due to high production costs and low commodity prices. While supporting farm relief, Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson called for an end to “frivolous spending” in the bill, urging Congress to prioritize farm aid.

House Ethics Committee secretly voted to release Matt Gaetz ethics report
SUMMARY: The House Ethics Committee has decided to potentially release its long-awaited report on former Rep. Matt Gaetz, who faced allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use during his tenure. This marks a shift from their earlier decision to keep the findings secret after a nearly four-year investigation. Gaetz, who has denied any wrongdoing, criticized the committee’s move, arguing he cannot respond as a former member. Most Republicans oppose the report’s release, believing the investigation should end with Gaetz’s resignation, despite precedent for releasing such reports post-resignation. Gaetz’s legal troubles appeared to conclude last year without federal charges.

Blake Anderson returning to Southern Miss as offensive coordinator
SUMMARY: Newly appointed head coach Charles Huff is assembling his staff at Southern Miss, welcoming former assistant Blake Anderson as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Anderson previously enjoyed success at Southern Miss from 2008-2011 before leading Arkansas State and Utah State, where he achieved a remarkable turnaround in 2021, winning 11 games and a conference title after a 1-win season. However, his career faced controversy after being terminated from Utah State in 2023 for allegedly violating Title IX procedures, leading to a $15 million lawsuit for wrongful termination. Huff’s staff also includes Dominque Bowman as defensive backs coach and Aaron Dobson as wide receivers coach, with more announcements pending.
