University System of Georgia to ban DEI, commit to neutrality, teach Constitution | Georgia

SUMMARY: The University System of Georgia’s Board of Regents has recommended policies promoting institutional neutrality, banning DEI tactics, and requiring education on America’s founding documents. USG institutions will avoid political or ideological tests, affirmations, or oaths in admissions, employment, or orientation. Employment decisions will focus on qualifications and abilities. Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, students will study key historical documents, including the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail.” The policies aim to strengthen academic communities, promote free thought, and ensure merit-based admissions and hiring.

Landscaper shot during robbery in Decatur

SUMMARY: A landscaper is in the hospital after being shot during an armed robbery attempt on Claremont Avenue. The incident occurred around 5 PM, involving suspects 17-year-old John Quay Holt and 22-year-old Jeffrey Thorp, who attempted to escape by running through nearby yards after the shooting. They were apprehended shortly after. Local residents expressed shock at the crime’s proximity to busy areas, including a bus stop, and called for increased police presence. Authorities are warning landscapers to be vigilant, especially as robberies targeting their crews have become more frequent in the area. Both suspects face multiple charges.

A landscaper was shot during a robbery on Thursday in Decatur and two young men have been arrested in connection to the incident. Eric Perry reporting.

Georgia certifies presidential election results | Georgia

SUMMARY: Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger certified the 2024 presidential election results, marking a faster, secure process compared to 2020. He congratulated President-elect Donald Trump, who won Georgia and other battleground states. Raffensperger, focused on election security since 2018, oversaw a statewide “risk-limiting audit” confirming accurate results. This audit, including hand counts of random ballots across 159 counties, showed minimal discrepancies. Georgia saw record voter turnout, with 5.3 million of nearly 7.3 million voters participating. Trump won Georgia with 50.73% of the vote. Governor Brian Kemp will now certify the state’s electors for the Electoral College.
