Trial begins for West Fork officer charged in driver’s death: Jury views body cam footage
SUMMARY: In December 2022, former West Fork police officer Christopher Cordero was tried for the death of 49-year-old Michael Hanna. Cordero pulled Hanna over for a suspended license and escalated the situation by pulling him from the car, placing him on the ground, and using a taser multiple times. Video footage shown in court depicted EMS trying to resuscitate Hanna. The prosecution argued that Cordero’s actions led to Hanna’s death, while the defense claimed Cordero acted within his duties. The medical examiner determined Hanna’s death was caused by heart disease, methamphetamine use, and the physical struggle. The jury will decide Cordero’s fate.
The jury of six men and six women watched bodycam footage that showed the encounter.

Arkansas commission clears deputy in controversial arrest case
SUMMARY: Former Johnson County Deputy Jason Cole was recommended for decertification by Sheriff Tom Hughes for his use of force during an arrest in January 2024. Despite this, the Arkansas Law Enforcement Standards and Training Commissioners deemed the force justified, allowing Cole to continue working part-time as a Tontitown police officer. Body camera footage revealed Cole striking a handcuffed individual following an altercation. Hughes expressed his disagreement with the commission’s decision, emphasizing his efforts to eliminate misconduct in the department, which has faced scrutiny under previous leadership. Cole’s actions were considered problematic but ultimately not criminal.

SUMMARY: Doctors emphasize the dangers of freezing temperatures for children, who are especially vulnerable to conditions like frostbite that can develop rapidly.
