Tracking the Tropics: How do hurricanes get their names?
SUMMARY: The National Hurricane Center (NHC) has been using a recycled list of names to identify tropical storms in the Atlantic basin for the past 70 years. The NHC maintains six lists of names that are used in rotation and recycled every six years. The names are chosen by the World Meteorological Organization and cover 21 letters of the alphabet, excluding Q, U, X, Y, and Z. The names must be instantly recognizable and reflect the geographical coverage of Atlantic and Caribbean storms, using English, French, and Spanish names. If a storm is particularly deadly or costly, its name may be retired and replaced. Several names have been retired in the past.
