Jefferson Parish lead water pipe problems – how to protect your health
SUMMARY: Residents of Jefferson Parish recently received concerning letters from the water department, indicating their water service lines may contain lead. While the letter does not confirm the presence of lead, the parish is implementing a project mandated by the EPA to identify and address lead pipes. Chronic lead exposure poses serious health risks, especially for children and pregnant women. To check your pipes, use a magnet and penny; if the penny scratches easily and the magnet doesn’t stick, it may be lead. It’s advisable to use lead-specific filters for drinking water until further assessments are conducted.
If you live in Jefferson Parish, you may have just gotten a letter from the water department that caused concern. WWL’s Meg Farris reports on what to do about it.
